The Scriptures

Many of my quilts come from inspiration I find in the scriptures and in iconic images from the Judeo-Christian tradition. In the 70 years since I was born, the number of bi-racial and multi-racial individuals has grown exponentially. And still, there is little, if any, artistic vocabulary that expresses those identities or addresses the uniqueness of that point of view.  This is perhaps truer of religious art and iconography than any other area of artistic expression.  Although visual images associated with worship are millennia old, Judeo-Christian art continues to be dominated by Western European images.

Historically, the peoples of the old and new testaments were Smectic, Aramaic, and African; Black and Brown peoples.  Europeans and their descendants recreated these people in their image.  In my work, I reimagine them using my own visual vocabulary.

I typically use blank black faces, not only to reference the true origins of the people, but also as a blank canvas on which the viewer may project any image they chose.
